July 5th and I thoroughly enjoyed my 2nd Spanish Language lesson with Tutor Lindsay.
As per the Welsh Gov New Curriculum for Wales Education policy presented last week I did indeed take responsibilty for my own learning ahead of meeting Lindsay on Teams today!
In this regard, I decided to put together some Spanish statements putting Google Translate to work and producing the following;
- ¿Hola, cómo estás? Mi nombre es Tim y ella es mi amiga Lindsay. Vivo en el norte de Gales y mi empresa fabrica guantes para ecuestres y moda.
- Quisiera pedir el desayuno por favor. Me gustaría pedir el almuerzo por favor. Me gustaría pedir la cena por favor. ¿Donde esta el baño porfavor?
- Quisiera un sándwich por favor. Quisiera dos copas de vino por favor. Vuelvo a Cádiz en septiembre para vivir aquí tres meses.
- Lo siento, solo tengo unas pocas palabras en español. Acabo de empezar a aprender. Puedo hablar francés y alemán.
- Muchas gracias por recibirme hoy en el aeropuerto. Me gustaría invitarte a almorzar o cenar.
My pupil plan with this text was to bring this to my teachers attention to see how well I could pronounce this Spanish text when starting the lesson today by reading this aloud to see if my teacher was able to follow along and understand what I was trying to say!
I have to say that I was quite impressed that my far from perfect pronounciation did seem to be understood and with this text to hand Lindsay was able to bring additional slants to the lesson on the vocab suggested by Google Translate.
For example, I learnt that instead of using un sándwich I could instead use the less formal word for a sandwich un bocadillo (an easy word to pronounce too always an advantage!) And furthermore, requesting a sandwich I could use the more commonly used Dimé (Give me) un bocadillo so a little less formal but by adding por favor to my sandwich request importantly it turns this request into a polite request.
So two lessons to date including getting to grip with Spanish numbers today too. Very useful ahead of my visit next week to Cádiz to check out an area that I have never visited before and very excited to do so! I am visiting Cadiz to familiarise myself with the area ahead of my intensive language course planned in Spain for later in the year!

And last year whilst bringing my glove collection to the Festival of the Horse event I met a classical Flamenco dance group performing at the show in Exeter, Devon. I have to admit that if I had known that I would be meeting such an elegant group I would have dressed more formally rather than t-shirt and shorts hence hiding out the back of our group picture!
I am now looking forward to returning to the Show at the end of August and full details can be found on the poster attachment.
Lindsay has also tipped me off to seek out a Spanish sweet delicacy Turron whilst in Cádiz. More on this next time!
